Government statement on the situation of Cameroonians in Ukraine

The Minister of External Relations informs the national and international public that, following the crisis in Eastern Europe, the Cameroonian Government has been and remains very sensitive to the situation of compatriots living in this area.

Immediately after the outbreak of this crisis, the Head of State, as usual, gave diligent instructions to the Government to take urgent and necessary measures for the consular supervision and the management of all compatriots in distress.

Thus, the following actions have been implemented :

1. The Ministry of Finance was instructed to proceed with the release and immediate transfer of funds to the Embassy of Cameroon in Berlin (Diplomatic post with easy access to Ukrainian borders), for the management of Cameroonians in distress;

2. For the needs of the cause, the Ministry of External Relations has set up a monitoring unit that monitors the situation on a daily basis;

3. The Embassy of Cameroon in Moscow, territorially competent, has, in accordance with the practices in such circumstances, put on alert from 26 February 2022, the main associations of Cameroonians in Eastern Europe. It then held a video conference to make them aware of the security measures to be observed;

4. In view of the difficulties on the ground linked in particular to the prevalence of hostilities on the eastern flank of Ukraine, which is still closed, almost all the Cameroon embassies in Europe, notably those in Berlin, Brussels, Paris and Rome, are mobilized to continue to provide all necessary assistance to the Cameroonians;

5. Similarly, the Diplomatic Posts in Berlin and Moscow in particular have set up crisis units with the following contact numbers : +4915210621925 (Mobile Phone, WhatsApp) and +79262033360. Those Cameroonians still stranded in Ukraine are encouraged to use either of these contacts;

6. On 05 March 2022, teams of Cameroonian diplomats were dispatched to the borders of Ukraine with Poland, Moldova and Serbia. They work closely with the International Organizations on the ground (OIM, CICR, OIPC, HCR) and the Presidents of the Associations of Cameroonians who have mobilized for this purpose;

All these actions sufficiently demonstrate that, contrary to what some malicious media broadcast on the supposed « inaction » of the Government, the Head of State has in this case, deployed all the necessary means as he did in the past during the repatriation, at the expense of the State, of 2665 Cameroonians stranded abroad in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic19, or for the return of those of our compatriots in difficulties as a result of crises in some countries around the world.

In addition, the Ministry disapproves of any erroneous and unfounded information, disseminated through social networks and/or by certain media whose objective is to question the constant and constructive action of the Head of State in favour of Cameroonians abroad and aimed at tarnishing the image of Cameroon.

The Ministry of External Relations, under the Very High Impulse of the Head of State, Head of Diplomacy, remains mobilized to bring appropriate solutions to the situation of our compatriots in Ukraine.
