Cameroon announces imports of 510,000 MT of petroleum products in the 3rd quarter of 2022.

Cameroon announces imports of 510,000 MT of petroleum products in the 3rd quarter of 2022, up 23.5%, The Minister of Water and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, has just launched an international consultation notice for the selection of oil traders to supply Cameroon in the 3rd quarter of 2022.

According to the document, the country is preparing to import 510,000 metric tonnes (MT) of distributed petroleum products as follows : 165,000 MT of super; 255,000 MT of diesel; 60,000 MT of Jet A1 and 30,000 MT of fuel 3500. These quantities are up 120,000 MT (or 23.5%) compared to those imported in the same period in 2021.

The Minister of Water and Energy does not explain this increase in imports. But it is taking place in a context where Cameroon has recently faced shortages of petroleum products including diesel. For the latter product, the order increased from 210,000 MT in Q3 2021 to 255,000 MT during the same period in 2022. The final deadline for the submission of candidates interested in the call for tenders is 13 May 2022.

Following the fire of the National Refining Company (Sonara), the only refinery in the country, occurred on May 31, 2019, Cameroon has changed its oil supply system on the international market. This new mechanism consists of the selection, by international tender, of four traders for a given period. The latter are responsible for making large quantities of petroleum products available in Cameroonian waters in order to sell them to local marketers and importers with a more competitive premium level as a selection criterion.
